Standing tickets with numbers: what the number decides, and how the queue works

What the number means

With no seats, whoever enters first picks their spot first. So each ticket gets an entry number, and low numbers go in first. A standing area may be split into sub-zones (A and B on either side, a pit at the front), each with its own run of numbers.

How numbers are given out

It depends on the show. Some number tickets in order of purchase, so buying early means a lower number. Others shuffle the numbers after the sale to blunt the advantage of bots. The show notice or the ticket page usually says which; if it does not, do not assume that early means low.

How entry runs

• Standing ticket holders gather in a separate area before doors.
• Staff call people in by blocks of numbers — 1–100, then 101–200 — and check tickets on the way in.
• Arrive after your block has been called and you usually go in after the blocks being called, sometimes last. A low number is only worth something if you are there on time.
• The gathering time and how numbers are called are announced per show.

As a group

Everyone enters on their own number. A low number usually cannot bring a higher one in early; the reliable way to stand together is for the group to enter on its highest number. Some shows allow otherwise — ask first. More in buying for a group.

If someone buys for you

A proxy controls when the order goes in, not the number. Where numbers are shuffled, nobody can promise a low one — anyone "guaranteeing a good number" for such a show is promising something they cannot do.
