Buying concert tickets in Japan: a different system

If you are used to "watch the clock, click fast" in Thailand or Korea, Japan will disorient you: most tickets are not sold first-come at all. This is about the shape of the system, because the shape is what trips people, not the buttons.

The three big platforms

Lawson Ticket, e+ and Ticket Pia share most concert ticketing in Japan. A show may sell on one or all three, each with its own rounds.

All three are built for people living in Japan. Accounts typically need a Japanese phone number, and many sales need a domestic address for delivery or collection.

Lottery, not a race

The biggest difference. For most concerts you apply during a window (often several days), wait for a lottery result, and pay only if you win. Several rounds run in sequence (fanclub first, then wider rounds) before any first-come general sale, which usually has very few tickets left.

So connection speed and clicking skill are nearly meaningless. The only thing that improves your odds is more valid applications across more rounds, and nobody can promise a lottery outcome.

Collection at convenience stores

Paper tickets are typically printed at in-store machines (Loppi at Lawson, FamilyMart’s terminal, or Seven-Eleven) using a booking code, within a set window before the show. More shows are moving to app-based e-tickets, but paper remains common.

For someone in Vietnam this means: if the ticket must be printed in a Japanese convenience store the week before the show, you need to be in Japan at the right time, or have someone who is.

ID checks and anti-resale

Japan controls resale tightly. Many shows print the buyer’s name on the ticket and check ID at the gate. Some use facial recognition. Tickets bought outside official channels can be refused entry with no refund.

Which makes "buy it for me and hand it over" riskier in Japan than anywhere else. If anyone buys for you, ask whether the show prints names and checks them.

Which doors open to overseas fans

Some promoters run a dedicated international sale: an English page, international cards, e-ticket or venue collection against a passport. It is the legitimate and easiest route, but it only exists for shows that planned for an overseas audience.

For a show with no international round there is essentially one way: a real resident of Japan, a real account, a real address, and the ticket collected in whatever way the show permits.
