Black market concert tickets: why they cost more and why they are risky

How the market forms

It appears exactly when official stock runs out and demand remains. Supply comes from two sources: people who bought to speculate, and people who bought for themselves and changed plans.

Prices inflate because the seller knows there is no alternative source. Closer to the date they can rise further — or collapse, if sellers start fearing they will be left holding stock.

Common frauds

• One QR code sold to several people. The same screenshot goes to a few buyers; whoever scans first gets in and the rest are stopped at the door.
• Tickets that never existed. A seller posts a genuine ticket image taken from elsewhere, takes payment and disappears.
• Already-voided tickets. Bought with a fraudulent card and later cancelled by the platform — the resale buyer loses everything and usually only finds out on arrival.
• Fake intermediaries. Someone offers to hold the money "for safety" and keeps it.
• Pressure to pay now. "One left", "transfer within ten minutes" — designed to stop you checking.

The core problem: you cannot verify it

For most shows a buyer has no way to confirm whether a QR code is still valid before the day. Platforms provide no lookup for anyone outside the original order.

So however trustworthy the seller looks, you are paying for something that can only be verified while standing at the door — the moment when nothing can be done about it.

That is the fundamental difference from a ticket issued in your own name from the start.

If you buy anyway

• Prefer the show’s official transfer channel where one exists. It is the only route where the ticket genuinely changes hands on the system.
• Avoid tickets that exist only as a QR screenshot in a message.
• Check the seller’s account history, not just their recent posts.
• Save every message and receipt at the time, before anyone can delete them.
• Do not transfer to an account in a different name from the person you are talking to.

How to avoid needing it

The surest way is not to end up there: prepare before the on-sale, consider a less contested tour leg, or arrange for someone to buy during the official sale rather than hunting afterwards.

A ticket bought in the official sale is always cheaper and always safer than one bought second-hand. Resale is a last resort, not a plan.
