Passing on a ticket safely, for both sides

First: does the show allow it

The first question, and the one most often skipped. Not every show permits transfer. Some tie the ticket to the buyer’s ID and check at the door — a passed ticket will almost certainly be refused there, however well-meant.

Check the terms before offering it. Offering a non-transferable ticket is the fastest way to defraud someone by accident.

If the show has an official transfer channel

Use it, without exception. It is the only route where the ticket genuinely changes hands on the system: ownership changes, the old code dies, and both sides have evidence from the platform.

Any fee it charges is almost always cheaper than the risk of losing the ticket entirely.

If there is no official channel

Where a private arrangement is unavoidable, these reduce risk on both sides:

• A video call to confirm the seller actually holds the ticket in their account, rather than just a screenshot.
• Talk on a platform where message history cannot be deleted by one side.
• Write down what was agreed: price, which ticket, which tier, who pays any fee.
• The person passing it on should delete any publicly posted images of the code, since old images can still be used by others.
• Pay an account in the same name as the person you are talking to, never an unfamiliar intermediary.

Passing at face value is the rule worth keeping

Passing at or below face value is the line that keeps this a favour rather than scalping. Raising the price on a ticket you no longer need, because you know someone else does, is a different act in kind.

Many fan communities have explicit norms about this and exclude people who mark up. Those norms exist because they protect the community.

When not to accept a passed ticket

• When the show ties tickets to the buyer’s ID.
• When the seller can only show a QR screenshot, not the ticket in their account.
• When the price is above face value — at that point it is not a pass.
• When you are being rushed to pay.
• When the seller’s account is new or has no history you can check.
